The mausoleum is built over a grave of the governor Shah Mahmoud Karahan, who was one of Karakhanid dynasty representatives. Local people had brought him to the level of Auliye-Ata (Saint Aged man) which influenced on renaming of Taraz to Auliye-Ata (1836-1936).

The main facade has been decorated with a brick pattern. According to the excavations in 1961, about 30 kinds of terracotta were used for finishing.

The inscription over an entrance to the mausoleum is in the Arab language and repeats the first line of Koran: “There is no God except Allah and Muhammad his prophet …”.

Mausoleum has been partially destroyed and in 1906 was restored on the former place.
